About Us

Alam Sari Hotel has operated for more than 10 years and over that time our commitment to the natural, cultural and human environment in which we exist has been one of our major aims. Great effort has been put into developing a green Alam Sari.

Environmental EthicEnvironmental Ethic

Energy, water saving and waste treatment: Our waste water is treated in an imported eco-system that breaks waste down biologically thus ensuring no waste water or solids go to ground or pollute the environment. In fact the treated water is used on our gardens. Waste food is given to local farmers as animal food, bottles, paper and plastic are recycled wherever possible at a recycling depot in Ubud. Other waste is disposed of responsibly. We also have an efficient composting system for our extensive gardens.

Our water is solar heated, we use no aerosol sprays, we use gas in our kitchen and no MSG or other artificial flavourings are used in our cooking. We have an organically friendly kitchen garden and grow some of the produce used in our restaurant.

Much of our modern furniture is made from kaji mas timber which grows on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa. There it grows rapidly in the managed tropical forest whose concessionaire responsibly mills 6000 trees per year and replants many more so the resource is sustainably harvested and responsibly managed.

At Alam Sari we have used the natural products of Bali and Indonesia wherever possible - natural rubber mattresses on our beds, hand woven Balinese cotton for our furnishing fabrics, local Balinese and Indonesian batiks and paintings, coconut wood pillars, and original Indonesian antique furniture make our decor uniquely Indonesian. Our gardens overflow with glorious tropical plants, flowers and trees of every sort.

Envoronmental EthicEnvoronmental EthicWe have recently planted vertifer grass to stabilize steep slopes on the path to our spa and villa. This natural method of soil stabilization is also useful as a repellent to insects and pests in our garden. The purchase of the grass and its planting has also benefited its grower and supplier, the East Bali Poverty Project, who we worked closely with and who we hope to continue to develop an ongoing mutually beneficial relationship with.

Organic gardening. We have recently developed fully an organic garden which supplies some of the vegetables and fruit used in our restaurant. As this develops we look to the day when we can be almost fully self sufficient on our own garden for these needs. We have a large composting bin which uses our waste and which supplies rich nutrients for our garden.

Alam Sari means Natural Essence, and this definitely extends to our Herb and Spice Garden Walk where you can visit to learn about the indigenous herbs and spices of Bali. Along the way you will see varieties of ginger, lemon grass, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, vanilla, coffee and cacao growing to name a few. As well we have a small medicinal garden, our “Apotik Hidup” (Living Pharmacy) where you can see plants used by the local Balinese to cure ailments of many kinds. Some of these are used in our therapeutic massage and spa treatments.

Beyond the herbs and spices is our Kitchen Garden where all the vegetables which are used in our restaurant are grown organically using an effective composting system. Fruit trees grow in our Orchard behind this garden, where you can see the tropical Balinese fruits such as pineapple, and mango, papaya, starfruit, sirsak  and banana trees.

Environmental EthicEnvironmental EthicSpend time under the blossoming cherry tree by our pond enjoying the ambience of the garden in the quiet solitude of our Meditation Area. It is a place where many varieties of butterflies visit our flowering plants used both for companion planting as well as temple ceremonies in the nearby villages. Our garden is bird and butterfly friendly with lots of plants and trees that produce flowers, fruits and seeds that attract these animals. Our rooms are named for the trees and plants which usually surround them or are nearby.

We have also pioneered our own nature walk guided by Alam Sari staff from the local villages which takes in an amazing variety of scenery and bird life in the surrounding area.
